Choosing The Right Fence

It might not seem like a difficult decision, but finding the right fence can be hard to do. In addition to choosing a picket style, a color, and a height, you might also be concerned about abiding by city and neighborhood ordinances. However, all of these decisions are easy if you choose the right fence contractor. A few years ago, I found a great contractor who helped us to create a beautiful, functional backyard in a few weeks. 2 Tell-Tale Signs You Need To Replace Your Fence

by Chester Alvarez

Are you wondering whether you should repair or replace your damaged fence? Although fences today are made to withstand the elements, they are still prone to wear and tear over time, and in some instances, a simple repair will fix the problems. However, you should know when these repairs will not cut it.

Here are two signs to replace your fence immediately.

1. Repair Costs Are Not Sustainable

If you keep fixing a leaning fence or a missing board, it is time to replace it.

Repairing your fence might seem less expensive, but continuous maintenance could prove more costly in the long run. The repair expenses will add up over time and could be more than the replacement costs. In this case, installing a new fence would be the more cost-effective option.

Additionally, once you notice that you need to hire a fence company for some repairs you could DIY before, it may be time to install a new fence.

Further, fencing experts have a general guideline called the 20% rule. The rule states that if more than 20% of your fence needs repairs or incurs damage, you should replace it instead of repairing individual sections. However, the 20% rule varies on a case-by-case basis. You have to consider the type of fence and assess the damage case-by-case.

2. It Has Severe Damage

A well-installed and maintained fence can last for years before needing replacement. However, even these fences are susceptible to damage. The most common causes of this damage include extreme weather and pests.

Excessive snow or rain will make your wooden fences rot over time, while a hail storm causes instant damage. If a storm hit your property recently, you may notice that the fence was uprooted, leaning, or has fallen debris. Do not hesitate to call a fencing expert to assess the damage before replacing it.

Damage by insects is also a big problem for wooden fences. Termites, carpenter bees, carpenter ants, and other burrowing pests can cause immense damage by digging holes. Luckily, there are a few signs to warn you of their presence. There may be termites in your wooden fence if you notice what looks like sawdust near it.

Ensure you are on the lookout for gnaws and small holes, as they will compromise the integrity of your fence over time. Therefore, remove and replace the damaged boards immediately after you notice them. But if the holes are widespread and affect multiple boards, your fence is failing. It may be cost-effective to tear down the whole fence and replace it instead of repairing the boards.

Hire a professional to advise you on the best fencing material for your property and install a new fence. For more information, contact a fence company near you.
